Reusable Baby Wipes

Bijgewerkt: 3 jun 2020

Would you like to use cloth diapers (just do it! here and here you can find more info) but are you a little hesitant about it? Maybe you can start with the use of cloth baby wipes. This is what I did when I wanted to start with cloth diapers and slowly I added more and more cloth diapers.

Obviously, cloth baby wipes are good for the environment but they are also a lot better for baby’s sensitive skin. I use the wipes with only a little water or sometimes with a bit of coconut oil. Disposable baby wipes have a lot more ingredients.

Note that the regulations mentioned in this article are EU based. This might differ from other parts of the world.

You might think that the chemicals used in baby wipes are researched and therefore safe. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. A Belgium research found that dermatologically tested baby wipes might cause contact eczema in adults . The French consumer association found that 32 of the 34 tested baby wipes contain toxic substances. These wipes contained perfume, parabens and phenoxyethanol. A different French research following up on previous research found even more toxic compounds (phenoxyethanol, ethylparaben, methylparaben, phthalates dibutyl phthalate en di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate). According to the EU laws, these are prohibited substances in cosmetic products for kids under 3. Some of these chemicals weren’t even mentioned on the package. These substances can disrupt hormone regulations and even harm the nervous system.

A while ago a mama told me very enthusiastically about the fact that she used disposable baby wipes to remove permanent marker from her sofa. My response: ‘If there is that much junk in these wipes that it can remove permanent marker, I wouldn’t want to use it on my baby’s face'.

I don’t know why there have to be so much chemicals in baby wipes. A cloth with a little water cleans bums and faces just as well. Luckily, not all disposable wipes are full of harmful substances. There are even wipes that have only water and some citrus concentrate (as a preservative). Unfortunately, these are very expensive. Luckily, there is toilet paper (not the wet toilet paper, these also have chemicals!) which is also a possibility if you think that cloth baby wipes is just too much work.
