Nora's Nursery Review - Real Nappy Week Day 4

Bijgewerkt op: 30 nov. 2023

It is Real Nappy Week! During this week, many brands dedicate this whole week to celebrate cloth diapers and promote their benefits to make them more accessible among new moms. Till this day cloth diapers is still looked down upon and considered something dirty and time consuming to do and I want to help remove the stigma from it.

As I have been cloth diapering for some time now, it seems like a good idea to share my experience with different brands of cloth diapers. Over the past several years, I have tried many different types and brands, not all successful, which I want to share with you. Today I will be reviewing Nora’s Nursery.

Other brands that have been reviewed during this week are Rumparooz, Buttons, Grovia, and Alva.

Background

Nora’s Nursery was founded in 2014 with the birth of Nora. It is a family-owned business based in the US. What started as a simple product idea slowly into a brand of beautiful products for young families. They were looking for an affordable and eco-friendly way to diaper their kids and they discovered cloth diapers. Switching to cloth diapers would be eco-friendly, but they quickly found out the upfront costs of starting a stash were more than they thought. Therefore, they started Nora’s Nursery. They want to bring cloth diapers into parents’ homes everywhere at a fraction of the price of traditional cloth diapers without affecting quality or style.

Production

Nora’s Nursery cloth diapers are designed in the US and responsibly manufactured in China. Their priority was a partner who had ethical manufacturing practices (labor, working hours, health and safety) and could produce safe diapers, high quality yet cost-effective. Even though they produce their diapers abroad they ensure they meet the same guidelines as US-made brands set out by the Consumer Product Safety Commission and meet testing requirements in CPSIA-accredited labs.

Types of cloth diapers

Pockets

Just like AlvaBaby, Nora’s Nursery has an amazing amount of prints to choose from for your pocket diapers. Each pocket diaper is made from PUL and has several rows of snaps to adjust the size of the diapers when your baby grows. The snap closure system around the waist is easy to use and can even overlap when your baby is still small. Double gussets (the extra elastic around the baby’s legs) better prevent leaking and keeps the mess where it belongs, in the diaper.

Each pocket comes with 2 inserts so they are ready to use.

Inserts

They have 2 types of inserts, one made with bamboo and inserts made with bamboo charcoal.

The bamboo ones have outer 2 layers are bamboo, with 80% bamboo and 20% polyester while the inner 2 layers are microfiber with 80% polyester and 20% polyamide/nylon. The former is soft against your baby's skin while the latter absorbed moisture fast.

Bamboo charcoal is a highly processed type of bamboo that has similar properties to microfiber. It absorbs fast but is also soft enough to go directly against the delicate skin of your baby.

Both types of inserts have a snap so you can secure them in place in the pocket.

Prefolds

Prefolds are very versatile for cloth diapering. You can use the on your own with a cover or you can fold the and use them to stuff a pocket diaper.

These prefolds have a snap so you can secure them in place using one of their covers. This prevents sliding of the prefolds and makes sure they stay where they are needed.

These dry much faster compared to inserts as you can completely unfold them to dry.

They have 2 types of prefolds, one made with bamboo and one made with hemp. The bamboo one is a 2-4-2 which means the outer 2 panels have 2 layers while the middle one has 4. The hemp one is much more absorbant compared to bamboo and consists completely of 2 layers of fabric.

Covers

The difference between pockets and covers is that coves don’t have fleece inside. Covers are great to use over fitted diapers or prefolds. Also, their covers have double gussets and an extra snap in the front so you can attach insets or a prefold into the diaper so it securely stays in place.

Swim Diapers

Nora’s Nursery doesn’t have a very large collection of reusable swim diapers but they come in a pack of 3 options with a wet bag. The material the swim diapers is made from dries very quickly so once you are out of the water, your baby won’t stay wet for long.

Note: A swim diaper (both reusable and disposable) is not made to absorb bodily waste. They are made to ensure that it does not end up in the swimming water but stays within the diaper.

Price range

  • Pocket: $10 - $16

  • Insert: $2 - $5

  • Prefold: $4.5 - $10

  • Swim Diaper: $8 - $10

Nora’s Nursery has an amazing variety of prints to choose from for pocket diapers making it very tempting to try a few of these because of the cute prints. I did the same thing and I have to say they did not disappoint. The PUL layer is much softer compared to other brands I used. It took a while to find the right setting to avoid leaks with my baby girl but once I found what was working for us, these pocket diapers are amazing.
