As you read here in my zero waste skincare routine, I love to DIY. I make my own cosmetics and I also love to make my own makeup. However, I know this is not for everyone. Just like not everyone likes to cook, not everyone likes to make their own products. I also sometimes do not have to times so I have a few cruelty-free, sustainable makeup brands I fall back to.
As I am based in Europe and I like that the products I use are produced locally to reduce my carbon footprint. Therefore, this list is not complete but these are brands I personally use and love.
Boho cosmetics is a French makeup brand.
They only use natural, recyclable or compostable packaging while still being affordable. Everything is produced within Europe but mostly in France keeping their carbon footprint low while helping the local economy.
Boho Cosmetics also donates 1% of their profit to charities that help prevent deforestation off rainforests.
All their products are of course cruelty-free, organic and have various French awards for planetary, ethical, and health requirements.
Avril Cosmetics is another French makeup brand.
Their certified organic cosmetics are approved by independent companies that guarantee that their formulas comply with the strict specifications of organic cosmetics, from raw materials to the finished products. Almost all their products are made in French and hundreds of trees have been planted by them last year to offset their CO2 emissions.
One of their most important missions is to have organic cosmetics accessible to everyone. They try to achieve this by keeping their costs as low as possible. In this price range, there is hardly competition and therefore, they do not need any advertising, keeping their products affordable for everyone.
Kjaer Weis is a Danish makeup brand. Simple but not plain. Beautiful but always genuine. That is what Kjaer Weis stands for.
Kjaer Weis ensures that not only are all our ingredients Certified Natural or Certified Organic but that they always reach the standards of luxury beauty. That means makeup that really works and works with your skin, not against it.
As just being conscious about their customers ' health and the environment was not enough, they designing sustainable packaging that you just don’t want to discard. Their refillable products are just gorgeous and look so luxurious. Almost like a jewelry box.
Zao Organic completes this list. Their products are 100% natural, certified organic, toxin-free, cruelty-free, gluten-free, and vegan.
What makes Zao Organic so special is how their products look. Their innovative bamboo refill system increases their commitment to sustainability and makes their products more cost-effective to us as consumers. The packaging is made from controlled harvested bamboo plants. It looks stylish and elegant while also being durable.
The powders, leaves, and oils extracted from the bamboo plant after harvest, are used in all of their products for their beauty and health qualities as well. So, nothing of the bamboo plant is wasted.
I hope this list of zero waste makeup brands gives you some inspiration to where to purchase your next lipstick. Maybe it from Boho Cosmetics or Avril Cosmetics as those two are very budget-friendly. Or, if you want something a little more luxurious, opt to go for Kjaer Weis or Zao Organic as these two brands are refillable.
